Chesterfield Festivals

Chesterfield Area Walking Festival  Chesterfield County Cricket Festival

Chesterfield hosts several festivals throughout the year.

Pomegranate Theatre New Playwrights Festival
14-17 March 2013

The Pomegranate Theatre has always recognised the importance of new writing and has encouraged writers to bring new plays as part of the theatre's drama programme.

This year there will be 6 new pieces performed as rehearsed readings in front of an audience and invited judges on Thursday and Friday, culminating in two finalists presented on Sunday evening. In addition, there will be a special performance on Sunday by Chesterfield College Performing Arts Students of a new play ‘The Puppeteer’ by young playwright Alice Bell.

For more information, including ticket prices, visit the Chesterfield Theatres website.

Chesterfield Community Arts Festival
3-6 May 2013

This new Festival will see local artists performing at various venues in Chesterfield town centre. The Festival will host the premiere of ‘Candy Girl’ a play about the lives of workers at Trebor’s famous sweet factory which was a major employer in Chesterfield from 1941 to 2003.

More details of the programme to be released in March 2013.

Chesterfield Area Walking Festival
11-19 May 2013

This annual 9 day Walking Festival invites walkers from the local area and further afield to discover the beautiful countryside that surrounds Chesterfield. Discover the pretty village of Ashover, take in some history as you follow Bess of Hardwick’s story all the way to Chatsworth, tour the five halls of Holmesfield or get your hands mucky on a sensory walk around Hardwick. Get up with the larks to hear the dawn chorus, or face your fears on the Chesterfield Ghost Walk.

If you’re looking for a challenge, try the Chesterfield Round Walk, a 34 mile trek through the countryside that surrounds the town. Or brave the Beast of Bolsover on a 20 mile circular hike. If that sounds all too much, try the Dronfield Round at 14½ miles, or take an evening stroll of 5 or 6 miles before heading to the local pub for supper.

Most of the 58 walks are free so there’s no excuse not to join us, and every excuse to have a pint at the end of several of them. All are led by a fully trained guide who knows the history, wildlife and the best countryside to walk through (as well as the best pubs to visit) in the beautiful Chesterfield landscape.

Booking opens in January at Chesterfield Visitor Information Centre or online at www.chesterfieldwalkingfestival.co.uk.

The first County Cricket match held in Queen’s Park was between Derbyshire and Surrey, in 1898 - the same year the Cricket Pavilion was opened. In 1904, the famous cricketer WG Grace played at Queen's Park in a match between Derbyshire and London County, and Don Bradman, the man many consider to have been the best batsman of all time, played here when the Australians toured England in the 1930s. John Hampshire, a former test batsman, called Queen's Park 'the loveliest ground in the country'.
