Eyes right as Mercians march into town

Chesterfield residents are invited to watch as 2nd Battalion The Mercian Regiment marches into the town.

The parade will take place at 10.20am on Friday 4 April outside the Town Hall, Rose Hill.

Anyone wanting to watch the parade should be in place by 10.10am.

Before the parade, the Duchess of Devonshire will present a new ram, the regimental mascot – known as Private Derby – to the regiment on behalf of the Duke of Devonshire.

The salute will be taken on the Town Hall steps by the Lord Lieutenant, Mr William Tucker and Chesterfield’s Mayor, Councillor Paul Christopher Stone.

Councillor Graham King, Chesterfield Borough Council’s executive member for governance, said: “2nd Battalion The Mercian Regiment is made up of many local young people and this is an opportunity for our residents to come along and show how much they appreciate the work of our armed forces.

“I’d like to extend an invitation to anyone to come along and watch the parade.”

The Mercian Regiment was granted freedom of entry to Chesterfield borough in December 2007 and has previously paraded in the town in March 2008 and March 2010.

Chesterfield has a reputation for welcoming members of the armed forces in the town with many local shops and businesses signed up to the Heroes Welcome scheme.

Chesterfield was the first town in Derbyshire to launch the scheme.

Businesses in the town centre display the Heroes Welcome sticker in their window to show that members of the armed forces are sure of a warm welcome. Some may also choose to offer a service upgrade or small discount.

Anyone wishing to display a Heroes Welcome sticker can collect one from the main reception at the Town Hall.
