Chesterfield Town Centre Masterplan

The Chesterfield Town Centre Masterplan sets out a long term vision for retail, commercial and residential growth, whilst protecting Chesterfield’s the historic core, with its famous ‘Crooked Spire’ and thriving market.  The masterplan was prepared by specialist regeneration consultants, URBED, to update and replace the previous town centre masterplan prepared by Scott Wilson Ltd in 2004.

URBED prepared the masterplan after extensive consultation with the council, local groups and the public, a process that involved workshops, meetings and an exhibition of proposals that was displayed in the Tourist Information Centre and, for one weekend, a Red London Routemaster bus located in New Square!

The masterplan maintains a relatively ‘light touch’ for the historic centre, concentrating on opportunities to improve the fringes of the town centre to increase its profile.  It identifies eight key development projects around the town centre, with the priorities for major change being the Northern Gateway (the Holywell Cross area), the Railway Station and the Markham Road corridor. The masterplan also highlights a range of ‘enabling’ projects around themes of Transport, Urban Form, Public Realm and Activity.
