Chesterfield Football Stadium Planning Application Approved
Chesterfield Borough Council has given its approval to the planning application for the redevelopment of the former Demaglass site in Whittington Moor for a new stadium for Chesterfield Football Club and a Tesco retail store, together with business, hotel and other uses.
The decision was taken at a special meeting of the Council’s Planning Committee held on 1st July at the Winding Wheel in Chesterfield. The meeting was attended by over 300 people.
The Committee unanimously resolved to approve the application subject to a legal agreement to secure a range of measures including transport improvements, CCTV, a park and ride scheme and public art.
The application will now be referred to the Government Office for the East Midlands for a 28 day period, to consider whether it should be ‘called in’ and decided by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, as the retail store is a departure from the development plan.
Councillor Ray Russell, Leader of the Council, said: "This was an important decision for the Council and the people of Chesterfield. The redevelopment of the Dema Glass site and the delivery of a new football stadium for Chesterfield are vital for the regeneration of the borough."
"The application was considered very thoroughly by the Planning Committee and I am delighted with the outcome."
"We hope that the Secretary of State will not see fit to call the application in and the leave the Council to issue its decision at the end of the month."
