Garden Assistance Scheme

The Garden Assistance Scheme is for Council tenants who have difficulty in managing their gardens. Priority is given to older people and people with disabilities.

The scheme offers a basic service where lawns and hedges are cut at regular intervals during the growing season.

There is a small charge for the scheme.  For 2010 this is

• Grass and hedges cut:  £2.65 per week
• Grass cut only:             £1.90 per week
• Hedge cut only:                75p per week

This charge is added to the rent and is payable for the whole year, not just for the period that the work is carried out.  This charge is still heavily subsidised with people on the scheme contributing much less than half its actual cost.

There is approximately one grass cut every fortnight during the growing season, with clippings collected after the first and last cuts.  Hedges are trimmed once at the beginning and once at the end of the growing season, with clippings collected after each cut.

The scheme is managed by the Neighbourhoods Team and the work is carried out by a private contractor.
