Licences
Statement Of Licensing Policy
We issue many types of licences to protect health and safety, avoid nuisance and secure the welfare of animals.
Licences are required for taxis, public entertainment, collections (such as lotteries and street collections), and pet shops, riding establishments, motor salvage operations, sex shops, pleasure boats, scrap metal dealers and a number of other activities.
If you are unsure about whether you need a licence for your business or any fundraising event, please contact the Council’s Licensing Officer, who will provide you with the appropriate information.
For most of the licences issued by the council you will have to pay a fee. The money goes towards the cost of providing the licensing service.
We aim to process licence applications as quickly as possible. For a number of licences such as public entertainment, the application has to be advertised to the public so that they an opportunity to make any representations. In some cases we also need to liaise with other organisations such as the police and fire service before we can decide whether or not to grant a licence.
Almost all licences have conditions attached to them but we aim to ensure that these are not excessive and only require what is necessary to ensure public safety.
From time to time our enforcement staff will check that any licence conditions are being followed.
If your licence application is refused, or you feel that we have attached inappropriate conditions, in most cases you have a right of appeal.
