Chesterfield Waterside forms part of the A61 Corridor Regeneration, which was granted 'Highly Commended' status at the 2011 Regeneration and Renewal Awards for its approach to Strategic Planning, and is the 47th largest regeneration project in the UK (source: Regeneration and Renewal Magazine).
- The project has outline planning permission for:
- Approximately 1500 dwellings;
- 30,000 square metres of office, business and industrial space;
- Shops, restaurants and leisure uses around a new canal basin on the former Trebor/Bassett factory site;
- A new stretch of canal;
- Protection and enhancement of the environment of the River Rother and Chesterfield.
The permission also includes an agreement that provides for the delivery, over the life of the development, of transport improvements and community benefits such as affordable housing, public open space and public art.
A planning application for reserved matters has now been received for the first phase of housing development; 19 affordable homes on the former Lavers site on Brimington Road
Chesterfield Waterside is a major, mixed-use regeneration scheme proposed for a 16ha canal-side site next to the A61, close to Chesterfield Town Centre and Railway Station. The site was part of the area covered by a Planning Brief published by the council in 2005, which also included land on the Dema Glass and Pearson’s Pottery sites to the north (which are being developed separately). The development is expected to deliver:
A Public-Private Partnership, Chesterfield Waterside Ltd (consisting of Chesterfield Borough Council and developers Urbo) was set up in 2006 to deliver this complex project. A development brief for the Waterside site was published in 2006 and followed up with a special public exhibition of the proposals at Chesterfield’s Pavements Shopping Centre in March 2008 before planning permission was sought.
