The Markham Vale Development is a major business development centred on the former Markham Colliery. This major regeneration and development project, involving Derbyshire County Council, will address problems of industrial dereliction and contamination while bringing much needed new employment development to this area of North East Derbyshire. The project will involve:
Over 127 ha of new employment development (85 ha in Chesterfield Borough);
- A new junction on the M1;
- Provision of a new loop road around Staveley;
- The restoration of derelict and contaminated land and;
- Provision for a rail freight terminal.
Outline planning permission for the scheme was issued by Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire and Bolsover District Councils in April 2005. Work is underway on the new junction 29a to serve the site and the loop road to Hall Lane at Staveley. The redevelopment of the whole site is due to be completed by 2015.
Discussion is currently underway on including Markham Vale within Sheffield City Region wide Enterprise Zone, which will bring incentives to new businesses to start up in the area
