Telecare is designed to enable older people and others remain living independently in their own homes for as long as possible.  It is about having special equipment in people's own homes to enable them to be safer.   It involves placing a variety of discreet sensors around the home which can indicate if there is a problem in the house such as:
  • A build up of gas escaping from a cooker
  • Fires and smoke
  • A flood from taps being left on
  • Part if the home being too hot (i.e. a cooker left on) 
  • Part of the home being too cold (i.e heating not working)
  • Carbon monoxide and natural gas

It can also indicate if a person has a problem, such as:

  • Having a fall
  • Have stopped moving
  • Have wandered outside at an inappropriate time
  • Have left their bed and not returned

If a problem is detected, the call monitoring centre will be alerted so that they can take swift action.  The system is monitored 24 hours a day, 365 days a year so provides a peace of mind for users and their carers.
