Waste and Recycling
Chesterfield Borough Council provides waste collection and recycling services to all households in the Borough approximately 48,000. In line with National and European targets we aim to recycle or compost as much waste as possible.
To help achieve this, a variety of collection systems are provided. These allow residents to sort and present waste in a number of different ways . Most houses have two wheeled bins, a green one for compostable waste and a black/grey bin for residual waste. Blue boxes and bags for recyclable waste are also provided and there is a network of nearly 100 recycling sites which provide local alternatives for recycling.
Keep recycling is the message…
You may have seen recent reports in the media, questioning the value of recycling your household waste. However, it is important that you keep up the good work and continue to recycle.
The market for some recycled materials is currently going through a difficult period, as a direct result of the worldwide economic downturn being felt across a wide range of industry sectors. This has meant that demand, and therefore prices, for some materials has dropped. Media reports have focused in particular on paper - demand for recycled paper does still exist, and for other materials such as glass, demand remains strong.
We would like to thank you for your tremendous recycling efforts, which have led to 17400 tonnes of waste being diverted from landfill over the past year.
It is important that you continue to recycle, even in the current economic climate. Anything you put in your black bin will definitely end up in landfill, which is bad for the environment and costly .
Across England, we recycled around 9.7 million tonnes of glass, paper, plastic packaging and other materials from our household and other local authority collected waste last year. This is estimated to have saved around 6.5 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, which is the same as taking 2 million cars off the road for a year.
