Chesterfield Borough Council is warning the public to stay away from unregistered tattooists following an increasing number of complaints.

Why use a registered tattooist?

All registered tattooists in Chesterfield have undergone rigorous inspections by the council's health and safety enforcement team before they are permitted to trade.

Registered tattooists must:

  • provide clean and hygienic premises
  • use infection control techniques to kill infections

Good quality tattooing equipment can be very expensive and unregistered operators are more likely to use cheap tattooing kits and be unaware of the risks involved in using them.

Dangers of using an unregistered tattooist

Unregistered tattooists:

  • may be inexperienced
  • may not operate in a clean, safe manner
  • may not sterilise their equipment correctly
  • often practise on members of the public as well as their friends

What can go wrong?

If a tattooist does not sterilise their equipment properly, there is a risk of infections passing between customers. The following infections can be transmitted easily by contact with very small amounts of blood.

  • HIV
  • hepatitis B
  • hepatitis C
  • tetanus

Cllr Chris Ludlow, executive member for the environment, says: "It is illegal for anybody to tattoo a member of the public without a certificate of registration, so anyone wanting a tattoo is strongly advised to ask to see the tattooist's certificate of registration and only use tattooists who have been registered with Chesterfield Borough Council."

Tattoo Hygiene Rating Scheme

In Derbyshire there is a Tattoo Hygiene Rating Scheme (THRS) which will help you choose a registered tattooist that meets high standards of hygiene and professionalism.

The scheme is designed to keep customers safe, ensure consistent high standards across the industry and support responsible local businesses.

All registered tattoo premises in Chesterfield are eligible to apply and are given a rating following a visit by an officer from our Environmental Health Team.

The scheme uses the nationally recognised four-star system:

  1. needs improvement
  2. satisfactory
  3. good
  4. very good

Our officers will give premises a rating based on their assessment of standards including:

  • Cleanliness of premises and equipment
  • Sterilisation of needles, instruments and materials to avoid the risk of infection and transmission of infectious diseases
  • Customer age checks
  • Staff training, vaccinations and health screening
  • Recognised trade body membership

Premises which are in the scheme will display a sticker and certificate at their premise and their rating will be shown below and on Derbyshire County Council’s website.
