Dog boarding in domestic premises
Chesterfield Borough Council has now introduced licensing for home boarding of dogs.
Anyone can apply for a home boarding animal licence (dogs) as long as you have not been previously disqualified under these acts:
An annual fee costs £160 and runs from 1 January to 31 December each year, which requires annual renewal. Please see the document Domestic Dog Boarding Licence Conditions below.
To apply for a home boarding licence you must complete the home boarding application form and return it with the appropriate fee to:

Check if you need planning permission before you make a licence application by using the number above and asking for a member of the planning team. Change in the use of a property may require planning permission.
If you already have planning permission for the same use, you should check that your licence application does not break any condition attached to the planning permission. If your licence is granted, planning enforcement action will be taken against you if you do not have the right planning permission in place.
We take into account the following:
- where the dogs will be kept and size of accommodation
- the number of animals kept
- exercise facilities
- temperature and lighting
- that all reasonable steps are in place to prevent and control the spread of infectious or contagious diseases
- whether appropriate steps will be taken to protect the animals in the event of a fire or other emergency
We also consider whether the animals will be suitably:
- supplied with adequate bedding material
This list is not exhaustive.
A licence will be granted following completion of an satisfactory inspection from an authorised officer of the council.
