North Midlands: Nottinghamshire Derbyshire devolution area

North Midlands: Nottinghamshire Derbyshire devolution area

  • Chesterfield Borough Council’s leader has pulled the council’s devolution bid to avoid an unnecessary waste of public money on a referendum called by Derbyshire County Council’s leader Councillor Barry Lewis.

Please note: other information on this page may now be out of date, and will be amended.

The North Midlands Combined Authority is made up of most councils in Nottinghamshire and some councils in Derbyshire.

The councils involved are working together to improve the economy of the area. The combined authority doesn’t have a devolution deal agreed with the Government.
Chesterfield is a non-constituent member of the North Midlands combined authority and has also applied to be a full member of the Sheffield City Region Combined Authority. The Sheffield City Region has secured a £900 million devolution deal with the Government over the next 30 years.

This means we don’t have voting rights in the North Midlands Combined Authority but can take part in discussions that affect Chesterfield.

Who are the members of the North Midlands Combined Authority?

The North Midlands combined authority includes the following Nottinghamshire councils as full members:

Ashfield District Council, Broxtowe Borough Council, Gedling Borough Council, Mansfield District Council, Newark and Sherwood District Council, Nottingham City Council, Nottinghamshire County Council and Rushcliffe Borough Council.

Bassetlaw District Council members voted to become non-constituent members of the North Midlands devolution area, and full members of the Sheffield City Region devolution area.

In Derbyshire, the following councils are full members of the North Midlands devolution area:

Derby City Council, Derbyshire County Council, Bolsover District Council, Derbyshire Dales District Council and North East Derbyshire District Council.
Bolsover District Council, Derbyshire Dales District Council and North East Derbyshire District Council members have also decided to apply to become non-constituent members of the Sheffield City Region devolution area.

Chesterfield Borough Council has applied to be a full member of the Sheffield City Region devolution deal and a non-constituent member of the North Midlands devolution area.

Amber Valley Borough Council, Erewash Borough Council, High Peak Borough Council and South Derbyshire District Council members have voted not to be members of the North Midlands Combined Authority area.
