Direct debit payment of council tax or business rates
Direct debit is a simple, safe and speedy way to pay your council tax or business rates automatically from your bank or building society account.
We will notify you of the amounts to be collected and the dates of the payments. If the amounts change, for example when the new bills go out in March, we will give you ten working days notice.
How do I set up a direct debit?
You can now do it immediately over the telephone. Just have your cheque book or cash card with you when you ring and we will set your direct debit up immediately. Telephone 01246 345 138 or 01246 345 171 to set up a direct debit instruction.
Alternatively, download a form, complete it and send it to us by post or give us a ring and we will send one to you by post or e-mail.
Once it is set up, do I have to do anything?
No, other than making sure there is sufficient money in your account to meet the payments when they become due. To help you with this, we will send you a bill stating the amounts and dates when your payments will be deducted. It's worth checking your bank statement regularly to ensure the payments are being taken in accordance with your bill.
What happens if a payment is taken in error?
All banks and building societies that take part in the direct debit scheme offer the direct debit guarantee. This entitles you to a full and immediate refund if a payment is taken in error. All you need to do is contact your bank or building society (even if the error was made by the council).
Can I cancel a direct debit?
Yes, by writing to your bank or building society. We would also appreciate being informed so that we do not try to collect any further payments from your account. If you do cancel your direct debit, your instalments will be due on the first of each month and you will need to make alternative arrangements to pay them.
Want to pay your Council Tax late?
Pay by direct debit and you can choose one of three dates in the month convenient to you. Although instalments will still be due on the first of each month, if you pay by direct debit you can have your payments collected by us on either the 1st, 10th or 20th of the month. These alternative dates are available to direct debit customers only. Please note - this option is not available for payment of business rates.
