Markets and Market Hall

  • Chesterfield Market is currently undergoing a multi-million pound transformation that will revitalise and better connect key areas of the historic town centre.

Plans include a new layout to make it easier to walk around our historic market, new stalls with modern facilities for traders, and vibrant new market stall canopies in heritage colours. All town centre businesses and market stalls will be open as usual during the regeneration work.

Chesterfield Market is one of the largest open air markets in England and has a rich history dating back to at least 1165.

It hosts a variety of different markets and events all year round.

Chesterfield's market was earning royal revenue as long ago as 1165, when the Sheriff of Derbyshire recorded an account of £1 2s 7d from the market of Chesterfield.

But it was the Charter granted by King John in 1204 that gave the town the right to hold a market twice a week and an annual eight-day fair at the Feast of the Holy Cross in September. The original market site was by the Crooked Spire church, but early in the 1220s it outgrew this area and was gradually moved to where we see it today.

Market Hall

Chesterfield's Victorian Market Hall was originally built in 1857 and was fully refurbished in 2013. Find out more about Chesterfield Market Hall
