Chesterfield's market was earning royal revenue as long ago as 1165, when the Sheriff of Derbyshire recorded an account of £1 2s 7d from the market of Chesterfield. But it was the Charter granted by King John in 1204 that gave the town the right to hold a market twice a week and an annual eight-day fair at the Feast of the Holy Cross in September. The original market site was by the Crooked Spire Church, but early in the 1220s it outgrew this area and was gradually moved to where we see it today.

General market

Market days – Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays all year round

Chesterfield market has become one of the biggest open-air markets in the area, selling everything from cutlery to carpets, from shirts to shoes, from pans to potatoes. Whatever you want to buy, there’s a stall selling it somewhere – it’s just a matter of finding it among all the stalls packed into the town centre.

Market hall

Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm (café and butchers from 8am)

The Market Hall was built in 1857 by a private company for the "shelter and safeguard of market people". The council bought the hall in 1873 and it has undergone several refurbishments since then. The latest and by far the largest was completed in October 2013 and involved a multi-million pound investment.

Flea market

Thursdays all year round

Come and experience Chesterfield’s flea market, which is fast becoming one of the largest in the country. Browse around the stalls and find yourself a bargain, or maybe a priceless antique in disguise – after all, one man’s junk is another man’s treasure!

Car boot sale

Sundays all year round

Come and find a bargain at Chesterfield’s busy car boot sale at the Proact Stadium, home of Chesterfield Football Club, off Sheffield Road. It is open to both traders and buyers from 8am. The event attracts over 150 car booters, with something for everyone, but be warned the car boot sale is popular and it’s always finished by midday so arrive early for the best choice!

Farmers’ market

Second Thursday of every month

A variety of local producers come to the farmers' market. A changing range of stalls include organic vegetables, rare breed meat, fish, Derbyshire honey, homemade cakes and cheese.

Artisan market

Last Sunday of the month, 10.30am to 4pm

Whether it's something for dinner, a gift for a friend, a treat for someone special or simply stocking up on essentials that you can't find anywhere else – Chesterfield's artisan market is the place to visit.
