In the Art Gallery, we started the year by saying ‘Happy Birthday’ to the Stephenson Memorial Hall (140 years old), which houses the Museum and the Pomegranate Theatre (70 years old) and the Museum itself (25 years old). This was followed by a display from the Chesterfield Photographic Society.
For summer, we’ll put up a display of work by local artist Joseph Syddall. The Museum’s collection holds more than 150 artworks created by Syddall in pastels, oils and pencil sketches, so only a selection of this work can be displayed but it will include paintings and sketches never displayed before.
In July we’ll explore the River Rother, working with the Don Catchment Rivers Trust. We’ll look at the industrial archaeology and the natural regeneration of the River in ‘Hidden Histories: Secret Streams’. From October through to December, we’ll welcome Chesterfield Rugby Club and their exhibition ‘Scrum’, celebrating their centenary.
Coming up next year, we’ll be hosting a display of work by the Chesterfield Embroiderer’s Guild. The major Wold War 2 exhibition will also extend into the Art Gallery.
There’s lots coming up and lots to look forward to in the Art Gallery so why not call in and see us.
