Medieval Pot

Medieval Pot

This pot was an unexpected find at Glasshouse Farm, New Whittington in March 2000.

It was discovered during the digging of foundation trenches for a new residential development.

An archaeological mystery…

The pot, thought to date from the 13th to 15th century, was found in a well. Had the pot been used to carry water or had someone thrown it down there when it had broken? It certainly looks badly damaged.

However, the hole in its side was made before it was fired. Perhaps a hand had touched the clay before it was hard. But who would sell and use a damaged pot and what did they use it for? Was the hole plugged to make it watertight? There is no evidence to tell us why.
