'Lady Golfer' wood carving
This wood carving of a female golfer is by local artist Joseph Syddall. More well known for his works in pencil, pastel and oils, Syddall also produced pieces such as this. Syddall’s father and brother were both skilled carpenters and Joseph looks to have shared this talent.
The piece was donated by his close friend Annea Spong, as she felt ‘…it would be of interest as another side of Joseph Syddall’s artistic ability’. In common with many of his works on paper, the figure is caught in an animated pose. The golfer is carved mid-drive and captures the power and movement of the protagonist.
