The firm of Frederick Lipscombe began as filter makers, based on The Strand, London, from the 1840s. Initially they employed Brampton potteries to make the ceramic cases for their filters, but - in the late 1860s - Lipscombe and Co founded their own pottery in Brampton and the business developed to produce not only filters but also architectural mouldings like this impressive object.
