Chesterfield Museum and Art Gallery offers visitors a friendly welcome with learning, creativity and fun for all.

Entry to the museum is free although donations to cover costs and help us to continue offering exciting exhibitions and fun events are always welcome.


There are events all year round from Lego Play Days to living history and everything in between. Check out our Events pages to find out more.


The museum does not have any onsite parking but there are plenty of town centre car parks less than a 5 minute walk away. 

Toilets and Baby Changing

Toilets are on the ground floor and include accessible toilets and baby changing facilities. (Please note these are currently closed due to COVID-19 guidelines)

Food and drink

The museum doesn’t currently have an onsite café, there are plenty of places to eat and drink nearby.  Please note: Food and drink cannot be consumed in the museum or art gallery.


The museum shop sells a wide range of local books, gifts and souvenirs as well as a variety of pocket money items and toys for children of all ages. (Please note this is currently closed due to COVID-19 guidelines)


We welcome guide dogs and assistance dogs.

Getting Here

The Museum can be found at St Mary's Gate, Chesterfield, S41 7TD. Situated on the corner of St Mary's Gate and Corporation Street, next door to the Pomegranate Theatre.

By Car

Junction 29 of the M1 motorway is just 10 minutes from Chesterfield via the A617.

By Bus and Coach

There are regular local bus services into Chesterfield town centre and National Express operate regular services to and from Chesterfield.  Chesterfield Museum is only a 10 minute walk away from Chesterfield Coach Station.

By Train

Chesterfield is on a major train route, just 1¾ hours from London and 15 minutes from Sheffield with through trains from Manchester, Birmingham, York, Newcastle and Bristol. Chesterfield Museum is only a 5 minute walk from the railway station.
