Chesterfield Museum and Art Gallery has events throughout the year, from Lego Play Days to living history, crafts to behind the scenes tours and everything in between.
Here’s a taster of events taking place in 2019. We start with Stone Age Life in the February half term and later in the year we’ll be meeting ‘Father of the Railways’ George Stephenson and discovering his connection with Chesterfield, and Bess of Hardwick a fascinating woman who had a knack for marrying well.
An alchemist is coming in April and you can decide if he’s a wizard or a scientist and see if he can really change lead into gold and create the Philosophers’ stone. Medieval Fun Day on Tuesday 30 July 2019 brings a medieval surgeon to the Museum with his medicines and leeches.
August brings the Animal Road Show to town with favourite furry and feathered friends from White Post Farm (15 August). In October Half Term you can meet a coal miner (31 October) who’ll be exploring what coal mining was like from the Tudors to the 20th Century.
In the run up to Christmas we’ll be looking at traditional games, some that you’ll know like hopscotch and Lego, some that you maybe won’t such as Fox and Geese and Nine Men’s Morris.
We have behind the scenes tours four times a year where you can find out how we care and conserve the objects in our collections, as well as how we label items and how we know exactly where they are when we need them.
We hold regular craft sessions run by StraightCurves with storytelling brought to life with props, mystery handling objects, our popular Person of the Week and our Object of the Month.
Entry to the museum is free although your donations will help us to continue offering great events like these every year.
