Queen's Green Canopy
Plant a tree in honour of Her Majesty The Queen
What is the the Queen’s Green Canopy?
The Queen’s Green Canopy is a unique tree planting initiative which was launched to help mark Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, inviting people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee.”
Following the wishes of His Majesty The King, The Queen’s Green Canopy initiative has now been extended to the end of March 2023 to give people the opportunity to plant trees in memoriam to honour Her Majesty.
As a nationwide initiative created to mark the Platinum Jubilee, the initiative was due to conclude in December – the end of the Jubilee year. However, as the official tree planting season in the United Kingdom is from October to March, the initiative will now be extended to include the full tree planting season, beginning in October 2022 and concluding in March 2023.
People across the country – from individuals, groups, schools and communities to larger organisations and businesses can all play a part by coming together to plant trees - which will not only serve as a lasting tribute to Her Majesty’s extraordinary service but will also help increase biodiversity across our borough.
What is the council doing?
A project, led by the council’s green spaces team, will see 48 oak trees planted on land at Darley Close, Staveley on 12 and 13 January 2023. The trees will be added to existing tree planting on site, creating a new copse - called the Queens Copse – in honour of Her Majesty.
Councillors will join the council’s tree wardens, school children and volunteers to plant the trees. There will also be some bulb planting with young children from nursery and local infant schools.
Over time the site will be managed in a way that is sensitive to nature and biodiversity and compliments the surrounding housing and open space.
