Year of Outdoors Events 

Please find below a selection of events taking place this month as part of our Year of Outdoors - events are listed in chronological order.

Please note: all walks featured on this page are subject to weather permitting.

Some events require booking to attend. To book or to ask for further information, use the contact details at the bottom of this page.

 

 

Community lantern-making workshops

4 and 11 December (various locations)

In preparation for Chesterfield Lantern Parade (Sunday 19 December), Junction Arts will be holding community drop-in workshops for making your very own paper or willow lantern.

This year, in partnership with the Year of Outdoors programme, workshops will involve making insect-themed lanterns.

Willow lantern workshops will take place in Staveley Hall on Saturday 4 December, and in Loundsley Green Church on Saturday 11 December - both sessions taking place from 10am to 4pm. A paper lantern workshop will take place in the town centre, also on Saturday 11 December.

Workshop – dates, times and locations

  • 4 December – from 10am to 4pm in Staveley Hall. This workshop is recommended for children aged 5 and over and must be accompanied by an adult.
  • 11 December – from 10am to 4pm at Loundsley Green Church. This workshop is recommended for children aged 5 and over and must be accompanied by an adult.
  • 11 December – taking place at the unit directly under the big screen on Vicar Lane in the town centre from 10am to 3pm. This workshop is open to everyone to attend.

Friends of Spital Cemetery tour

1pm, Sunday 12 December

Join the monthly tour of Spital Cemetery with a Christmas theme, followed by refreshments and mince pies!

The group will meet at the bottom entrance on Hady Hill at 1pm. Sensible clothing and footwear are both highly recommended, and a donation of £5 is suggested.

Santa stroll

10.30am, Thursday 16 December

All are welcome to join our Holmebrook Valley Park Walk With Us group for our Santa stroll on 16 December. The group will meet by the park café (by the top car park) at 10.30am.

Santa hats, Christmas jumpers or reindeer antlers are optional - but strongly recommended! Once the walk is finished, why not warm up with a drink in the café afterwards?

Little elves and baby Santas buggy walk

10.30am, Friday 17 December

Come and join our Queen's Park buggy walking group for a little elf walk - a chance to dress your little one in that cute elf or Santa outfit and tinsel up their buggy!

Meet outside the Queen's Park Sports Centre reception for a short walk in the park followed by refreshments in the sports centre café.

Chesterfield Lantern Parade

3.30pm, Sunday 19 December

You won't want to miss this magical festive parade of home-made lanterns, which will head into the town centre from Queen's Park before a joyful session of carol-singing.

The group will congregate at the Queen's Park bandstand at 3.30pm for entertainment provided by the Handmade Samba Band, before the parade sets off at 4pm for the town centre.

The parade will finish at the Christmas tree in the marketplace, where a brass band will accompany some festive carol-singing.

Make your own lantern template

If you cannot make it to a community lantern-making workshop, then you can make a lantern at home using these instructions and templates. For this version you can use a recycled plastic bottle.

Road closures

The following roads are closed whilst the parade makes its way into town on Sunday 19 December:

  • West Bars from its junction with New Beetwell Street to its junction with Low Pavement
  • Low Pavement from its junction with New Beetwell Street to its junction with Market Place
  • Market Place from its junction with Low Pavement to its junction with New Square

 

Hunloke Walk with Us Santa Special

10.30am, Wednesday 22 December

Join us for our last Hunloke Gardens walk of 2021! Santa hats, Christmas jumpers or reindeer antlers are optional - but strongly recommended!

Rumour has it that there will be mince pies afterwards...

The group will meet at the cabins in the gardens, off Church Street South, S40 2TF.

Holmebrook Valley Park walk

10.30am, Thursday 23 December

Join our Holmebrook Valley Park Walk With Us group for our final walk before Christmas! We will be meeting by the café by the top car park in Holmebrook Valley Park.

Please note that the café will not be open on the day - so bring a flask! Contact our community lifestyles officer for more information.

 

Walk off the turkey!

10.30am, Thursday 30 December

Join our Holmebrook Valley Park Walk With Us group for a blast of fresh air and some good company as we walk off some of our festive indulgences.

We will be meeting by the café by the top car park in Holmebrook Valley Park. Please note that the café will be closed on the day, so remember to bring your own refreshments!
