Welcome to the council's information relating to sustainability
Since 2005 Chesterfield Borough Council has successfully achieved accreditation in the Eco Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) and has developed a rigorous programme of internal environmental audits to maintain clear commitment to environmental management across all service areas.
On this link you will be directed to a number of key policy documents related to allotments, transport and biodiversity.
The council has produced an Environmental Policy (see below) that details the main areas in which it seeks to minimise negative environmental impact from its operations. In particular we will set and review our objectives and targets in line with internal procedures, aiming to:
- improve energy efficiency
- reduce emissions to air
- reduce water usage
- increase environmentally preferable procurement
- improve waste management
- protect and enhance biodiversity
Chesterfield Borough Council has a unique array of wildlife habitats located in close proximity to the town centre with the country parks of Holmebrook to the west of the town centre and Poolsbrook, east of the town centre, only a short distance by bus or bicycle. The borough has four rivers, all acting as important corridors for wildlife, and a canal that is brimming with a host of locally and nationally important species of insect, bird, mammal and flower.
With so much happening it is no coincidence that the council places special emphasis on the careful management of these areas in the realisation that they are places for present and future generations to enjoy and cherish.
