Coronavirus outbreak: Chesterfield Borough Council services update - 3 April

Chesterfield Borough Council is prioritising the delivery of essential services but in line with the latest Government guidance we are adjusting some of the services that we provide.

All of the latest service-related updates can be found in the dedicated Coronavirus information hub.

Chesterfield and District Crematorium

Following an update in legislation from the Government, we are having to take the extremely difficult action to close the crematorium building to general access from the public. The building remains open for services, but it is otherwise closed to the public until further notice, this includes the book of remembrance room and the public toilets. The grounds of the crematorium will remain open, but this will be kept under review in-line with the latest guidance available.

Many people visit to view the book of remembrance and find comfort in doing this, you can still view the book online.

Councillor Jill Mannion-Brunt, cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “We realise that for a lot of people the crematorium is an important place to remember loved ones, but at this difficult time Government legislation requires us to limit access to the crematorium building in order to protect members of the public and our staff.

“We know that some local residents like to use the crematorium grounds as a place to reflect, and they can continue to do this, but we politely request that all visitors follow the social distancing guidelines. We appreciate your understanding during these exceptional times.”

We would also like to reiterate the latest Government guidance relating to funeral arrangements. Funeral services are now limited to immediate family members only, but we can still support online streaming of services for wider friends and family. You can arrange this through your funeral director.

The waiting room is closed and if attending a service, you should wait in your vehicle in the car park. Please be mindful that any loud noise could disrupt another family’s service.

Services have been limited to a maximum of 25 minutes and there will be no service books available, but paper printouts can be ordered through your funeral director.

We can also only allow one person at a time into the office to collect cremated remains.

If you are a member of a vulnerable group or are showing any symptoms of coronavirus, please follow Government advice and do not attend services.

We do appreciate that at such an incredibly difficult time for family and friends these arrangements will add to those difficulties, but we must follow the Government’s guidance for the safety of residents, communities and our staff.

Council housing repairs, improvements and safety checks

Our focus, as always, is on maintaining the safety of our tenants and providing high quality services. We are focussing our staff and resources on essential services to keep our tenants, residents and estates safe and protected.

We are currently prioritising the delivery of the emergency repairs service. To request an emergency repair, please email responsiverepairs@chesterfield.gov.uk.

All non-urgent works are being recorded through the Customer Contact Centre and we will look to contact customers and re-schedule appointments as soon as we can. You can request repairs using our online form.

Safety checks on your gas and electrical systems are continuing. These services are essential to ensure your safety so it is important that you let us know if you are self-isolating or have coronavirus symptoms so we can rearrange these checks as soon as possible.

Fire safety and legionella testing is also still taking place in all our sheltered housing schemes to make sure our blocks remain safe for tenants.

Maintenance and repair work is continuing on empty homes and our teams are following safe working practices in line with Government guidance. By carrying out this work, we can make sure we have homes available to be able to offer people who may need emergency accommodation.
