Independent remuneration panel member

We are looking for a new member to join the council's independent remuneration panel.

The council is required to have a members’ allowance scheme to ensure councillors receive fair allowances for their official duties, with extra amounts being paid for any additional responsibilities they have, such as being the chair of a committee. This helps ensure that a diverse range of people have the opportunity to act as local representatives.

We have an independent remuneration panel, which is made up of an impartial group of people who have no connection to Chesterfield Borough Council, but have an interest in local government and how it can affect their communities.

The panel looks at what councillors do, how much time they spend on their duties and advises the council on fair levels of payment.

Every four years we carry out a full review of the members’ allowance scheme which will require the panel to sit for two or three meetings in order to produce a report with recommendations to ensure the allowances are appropriate and fair.

There may also be additional times during the four year term that the panel are asked for a view.

Ideally, we are looking for someone with experience of the local voluntary sector. Appointments to the panel are for a four year term. The role is voluntary and an allowance will be paid to panel members to cover expenses for time spent on panel work.

Members of the independent remuneration panel cannot be either an elected Member of the council, a member of any committees of the council or an employee of the council.
