How to pay your council house rent, garage rent, water rates (for council properties) and Careline charges


Payment calendar

A payment calendar is printed on the back of the new rent charge letter that you receive at the beginning of the financial year.  If you require another copy you can print the calendar below or call us on 01246 345510. The calendar shows the four free rent weeks.

Pay by direct debit

Chesterfield Borough Council recommends direct debit for payment of your rent and other housing related charges. If you wish to pay by this safe and convenient method, please ring 01246 345 510 and this can be arranged immediately over the telephone, as long as you have your bank details available (these are on your cash card or cheque book).

Alternatively, download a direct debit form (below), complete it and send it to us by post or call 01246 345510 and we will send one to you by post.

If you choose to pay by direct debit you can select your payment date from one of three alternatives: 1st, 10th or 20th, to suit your circumstances. Payments can also be arranged weekly.

Please note that if you are paying by credit card there will be an extra charge of 1.5 per cent to pay. This is to cover the charge that the council has to pay to the credit card companies. There is no extra charge for payment by debit card.

By telephone

Please ring 0845 602 0214 to pay using your debit or credit card. Debit cards accepted are Visa Electron, Visa Delta, Switch/Maestro and Solo. Credit cards accepted are Visa and Mastercard (not American Express). Please note no charge is incurred for debit card payments. However, a 1.5 per cent charge is applied for credit card payments.

Please ensure you endorse the back of your cheque with the tenant(s) name, address and rent reference number. Cheques and postal orders should be crossed and made payable to Chesterfield Borough Council, not to an individual officer. Post-dated cheques will not be accepted. Please do not send cash through the post.

Payment card

You can pay by using a rent payment card at any Post Office or PayPoint outlet.  You can order a card by calling 01246 345501 or complete an online enquiry form.

The card comes to you by post and can take up to three weeks so please pay by a different method until your card arrives.

Post Office giro

You can pay using a Transcash voucher available from any Post Office. The payer will be required to pay a fee to the Post Office. The voucher must show the tenant’s full name, address, rent reference number and the Chesterfield Borough Council Giro Account number 4096711.

Standing order

You can arrange this yourself direct with your bank, quoting the below payment details and your rent reference number. You would then have to make your bank aware of any changes to your rent (such as yearly rent increase or changes to housing benefit).

Please note that when paying by standing order/online or Post Office giro, a minimum of four clear working days should be allowed for the payment to be received by the council.
