Introduction of a 12-month residency requirement

Introduction of a 12-month residency requirement

The government has issued statutory guidance to local authorities on providing social housing for local people. This includes a residency requirement for applicants wishing to apply for council accommodation.

The government has recommended that a person wishing to apply for council accommodation should normally have been living in the borough where they are applying for accommodation for a period of two years. We think that a period of one year is more appropriate for Chesterfield.

There are exceptions for some groups of people, including:

  • certain members of the armed forces
  • statutory homeless households
  • people who are employed in the borough on a permanent contract

Some people have an exceptional or urgent need for accommodation in Chesterfield and we will assess such cases on a case-by-case basis.

By introducing the residency requirement, we will prioritise local people for council accommodation.
