There is a high demand for both housing and garages, but for housing in particular.

In some areas of the town, there is a greater availability of some types of property. This housing may be available to people who are on our housing register, but who do not have a high level of need. For more details about this sort of property, please contact the Housing Options Team.

When properties become available to let, they are advertised on Home-Options. They are then allocated in accordance with our policy.

We have bungalows in most parts of Chesterfield.

There is quite a high demand for bungalows, and when they become empty they are normally made available to those people on our housing register who need them most. In accordance with council policy, bungalows are normally allocated to people of pensionable age or to people with a qualifying disability.

There is a higher supply of some good-quality, lower-demand bungalows - these tend to be one-bedroom properties in neighbourhoods that are a little further from Chesterfield town centre. When they become empty, these may be available to people who have a low priority or who live outside of the borough if there is no local demand.

Seventy-five per cent of bungalows that become vacant will be advertised with a preference to current Chesterfield Borough Council tenants. Twenty-five per cent of bungalows that become vacant will be advertised with a preference to non-council tenants.

Applications are welcomed from people currently living outside of Chesterfield.

We have houses in all parts of Chesterfield.

There is generally a high demand for family houses. When these houses are empty, they are normally allocated to those families on our housing register who need them the most.

However, there can sometimes be a higher supply of some good-quality houses. These tend to be in neighbourhoods that are a little further from Chesterfield town centre. When they become empty, we may make these houses available to people who do not have much priority on the housing register, such as those in a lower band or with a low number of points.

We have flats in most parts of Chesterfield.

There is generally there is a high demand for family houses. When these flats are empty, they are normally allocated to people on our housing register who need them the most.

Where flats are available in high supply, they may be offered to people with less priority on our housing waiting list, such as those with a low number of points.

We have maisonettes in some parts of Chesterfield.

There is generally a high demand for maisonettes. 

When these maisonettes are empty, applicants with children will be given first preference. If there are no suitable applicants or bids received, applicants with access to children will be considered. Preference will then be give to applications with two or more adults.

Under normal circumstances, a household with only one adult will not be considered for this type of property.

There are a number of independent living schemes in Chesterfield.

Each independent living scheme consists of approximately 30 self-contained, one-bedroom flats within the same building, with access by lift or stairs to the first floor. Some schemes also offer flats with two bedrooms.

All our independent living schemes benefit from Careline and well-appointed & equipped common rooms, in which residents can meet and pursue social activities. Consideration is given only to people aged 60 and above.

When properties are empty, they are normally allocated to those people on our housing list who need them most.

However, there is a good supply of flats in some of our Independent Living schemes. This provides a good opportunity for people who do not have much priority on our housing list to live in a safe, secure and well-served type of housing.

The flats available in higher supply, can be offered to people who appear in lower bands or have no points.

Existing Chesterfield Borough Council tenants moving to Independent Living schemes may qualify for a payment under the Transfer Incentive Scheme.
