New Saltergate multi-storey car park now open

Our brand new Saltergate multi-storey car park, in the heart of Chesterfield, is now open.

New Saltergate Multi-storey Car Park

The new car park is located on Saltergate close to local shops, restaurants and entertainment venues.

With 526 spaces, the new car park is open 24 hours and has wider spaces than the previous car park it replaces.

There are also 32 disabled spaces and 15 parent and child spaces available.

Access to the new development is controlled by barriers at both the entrance and exits, with drivers collecting a ticket on their way in to the car park. This ticket is then needed to re-enter the car park through the pedestrian entrances.

The car park is un-manned but has CCTV running throughout and an attendant can be contacted by pressing the call button on the payment machine if users lose their ticket for example.

Works on the car park have been carried out in a timely fashion and on budget, with this development being part of the Northern Gateway scheme which includes the privately-led Premier Inn hotel, the council’s new enterprise centre and street improvements to Elder Way and Knifesmithgate.

The car park is covered by a network of monitored CCTV cameras.  Plus the primary stair core has been deliberately designed to offer an open aspect so that customers approaching the building on foot will at any time have an unhindered view in to the main lobby area and stairwells.

No, Premier Inn will not be having any form of parking redemption for guests.

The building’s managed LED lighting system provides energy consumption savings of up to 75 per cent when compared to fluorescent lighting systems. Plus the provision of vehicle charging points aims to support the move to electric vehicles.

The colours used on the cladding system have been selected for their reference to the local brickwork and in particular the listed buildings along Saltergate which go to form part of the town centre conservation area.  These buildings typically used orange / red multi bricks with a sand faced finish.

In general darker colours are used more towards the lower part of the building elevation, with lighter colours becoming dominant as the height increases.  This helps to reduce the visual impact of a necessarily large building.

The perforations add texture and contrast to the building, breaking up its perceived bulk.  They also ensure the building is naturally ventilated.  They have been designed to minimise light spill from the building into adjacent properties.

The combination of entry control systems, CCTV monitoring and open aspects, which enhance visibility throughout the building, make it a safe and secure building for users.

The vertical circulation model is designed to offer maximum clarity of navigation and good visibility for pedestrians and vehicle users alike as they move about the building.  All parking bays are larger than those previously offered and are designed to be free of any obstructions / obstacles for easy, accessible and convenient use.

The building also offers an excellent position from which to access a whole range of town centre attractions and facilities.

The Saltergate car park is owned and operated by Chesterfield Borough Council and is located on Saltergate close to local shops, restaurants and entertainment venues.

The Northern Gateway Scheme, including Saltergate car park, has been funded by Chesterfield Borough Council and Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership.
