Significant steps to address untaxed vehicles approved

Chesterfield residents are set to benefit from cleaner, safer neighbourhoods thanks to a new pilot project which will give Chesterfield Borough Council more powers to take action to move untaxed vehicles.

The council is set to join forces with the DVLA Devolved Power Partnership Programme for a six-month pilot, after the scheme was approved by the council’s Cabinet.

The new partnership will allow the council to remove or clamp any vehicles that are untaxed.

Under the scheme, vehicles owners will have to pay a release fee.

Councillor Jean Innes, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “We know that untaxed and abandoned vehicles can be a real blight on neighbourhoods and sometimes become a focus for crime and disorder. By joining the DVLA Devolved Power Partnership Programme, it will have positive benefits for our communities as we will be able to move much more quickly to get untaxed vehicles off our roads.

“This six-month trial will allow us to test systems, with the aim of moving to permanent arrangements. My message to motorists is please ensure that you tax your vehicle if you keep it on the road but if it has reached the end of its life then please dispose of it responsibly.”
