Your Council Tax explained

In Chesterfield, your Council Tax is collected by Chesterfield Borough Council, but it also pays for a range of other services across the county that are delivered by Derbyshire County Council, Derbyshire Police and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Only 9% of your Council Tax bill actually comes to Chesterfield Borough Council to allow us to deliver essential services. The rest is shared between the other organisations – with about three quarters of your total bill going to Derbyshire County Council, about 13% to Derbyshire Police and 4% to Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The chart below shows how your Council Tax bill is split between each organisation:

Where your Council Tax goes

If you live in Brimington or Staveley, a percentage of your total Council Tax bill will also be used to deliver parish council services.

The amount that we receive helps us to deliver more than 50 services – many that we all use and benefit from, and some that are there to help the most vulnerable people in our community.

This includes:

  • waste, recycling and street cleaning services – which keep our neighbourhoods clean, tidy, and well maintained
  • two state-of-the-art leisure centres – a place for people to keep fit, healthy and connect with others
  • investment in our much-loved town centres, and our arts and cultural venues – helping them thrive for generations to come
  • keeping our much-loved and award-winning parks and green spaces looking their best – offering welcoming spaces for families to enjoy
  • providing support for people who may be facing homelessness and allows us step in and help them
  • a whole range of services that keep us all safe – including environmental health and licensing

Money received from Council Tax helps us to keep our borough vibrant, safe, and thriving.

We’re only able to set the charge for the services we provide, not the total amount of your Council Tax bill. Derbyshire County Council, the police, and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service set their own portions of the bill each year.

2026/2027 Council Tax

Like all councils, we continue to face significant budget challenges – and the demand for our services continues to grow.

To allow us to protect and continue to deliver the essential services that our community rely on every day, we will need to make a small increase of 2.99% to Council Tax for the coming year.

We understand that any rise in Council Tax is a further pressure on households, and we never make the decision to increase it lightly, but we have tried to keep the rise as low as possible:

For the vast majority of people in Chesterfield who live in a Band A property, this means an extra 8 pence a week (£3.92 a year).

For residents living in Band D households, the increase will be 11 pence a week (£5.88 a year).

The illustration below shows you how much each household pays through Council Tax each day towards the services we deliver:
