Are you looking to develop your finance career in a supportive and forward‑thinking public sector organisation? Chesterfield Borough Council is seeking a dedicated Finance Assistant to join our Finance Team and help deliver accurate, timely and high‑quality financial services across the council.

About the Role

As a Finance Assistant, you will play a key role in maintaining strong financial controls, supporting financial management processes, and ensuring the accurate recording of financial transactions, with a particular focus on the Council’s insurance arrangements

You will be responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Council’s insurance arrangements including coordinating insurance administration, supporting the management of claims, liaising with insurers and internal services, and ensuring accurate records are maintained.

You will also work closely with colleagues across the Council to support reconciliations, grant claims, and month-end and year-end processes. This is an excellent opportunity to gain broad exposure to public sector finance in a collaborative team environment. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Process and track insurance claims, liaising with internal teams and insurers.
  • Ensure compliance with financial controls, procedures and policies.
  • Assist with regular review and reconciliation of control and suspense accounts.
  • Support month‑end and year‑end close activities, ensuring deadlines are met and information is accurate.
  • Assist with completing grant claims and statutory returns.

About You

We’re looking for someone who has a clear understanding of financial controls and accounting procedures as well as experience in financial reporting, reconciliations and producing quality working papers. You will also have three years’ experience working in a finance environment (public sector experience desirable) Is part‑qualified AAT or equivalent, or willing to work towards AAT.

In addition, you will also be able to demonstrate: -

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Confident using Microsoft Excel, Word, and financial management systems.
  • Manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines and work both independently and as part of a team.
