Improving energy efficiency in our homes

As part of our ongoing commitment to creating more energy-efficient homes and helping our tenants reduce their energy bills, we are taking positive steps to assess and improve the energy performance of our current council housing stock.

To help us reach our goal of making all our homes as energy efficient as possible, our dedicated team of asset management officers are currently carrying out energy performance assessments across our council homes.

An energy performance assessment, otherwise known as an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), is an official document that provides a rating for the energy efficiency of a property. The rating is graded from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient) and includes recommendations on how the property can be made more energy efficient. EPCs are crucial for understanding how much energy a home uses, identifying potential savings, and guiding investment into improvements.

EPC assessments allow us to:

  • measure the current energy efficiency of each home
  • identify areas where improvements are needed
  • develop targeted strategies to reduce energy consumption
  • prioritise investment into retrofitting and other energy-saving measures

With energy costs continuing to be a significant concern for many households, especially in the current economic climate, improving energy efficiency is more important than ever. By improving the energy efficiency of our housing stock, we aim to:

  • reduce energy bills for you, our tenants
  • lower carbon emissions
  • create warmer, healthier living environments
  • ensure our homes meet modern sustainability standards

Councillor Jean Innes, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “As part of our ongoing commitment to becoming a carbon neutral borough, we’re taking positive action to improve the energy efficiency of our council homes.

“By carrying out energy performance assessments across our housing stock, we’ll be able to identify where improvements are needed to improve the energy efficiency of our tenants’ homes. This will help us make improvements to make sure all our homes are warm and comfortable, whilst also helping to reduce energy bills for tenants.”

Tenants can request an EPC assessment by emailing energy@chesterfield.gov.uk or calling 01246 345075.

This project is just one part of our wider commitment to supporting residents and building a greener, more energy-efficient future for Chesterfield.
