Taking action against anti-social behaviour

Positive and proactive action is being taken to reduce anti-social behaviour on estates across Chesterfield.

Chesterfield Borough Council remains committed to keeping its communities safe and has already delivered a series of successful enforcement measures this year.

Following reports from concerned neighbours, the council’s housing management team has been working closely with Derbyshire Constabulary to address persistent nuisance behaviour, secure legal orders against problem tenants, and prevent further nuisance behaviours.

Over the first quarter of the year, positive enforcement action from both the council and police has resulted in multiple closure orders being served to tenants - which prevented anyone other than the tenant, council staff, or emergency services from entering the properties for a three-month period.

Further action including civil injunctions and possession proceedings have also been granted since the turn of the year to tackle unwanted behaviours, and a significant number of formal warnings have been issued to tenants whose behaviour has caused disruption in their neighbourhoods.

Officers have also taken swift action on lower-level issues, issuing dozens of breach-of-tenancy warnings and community protection notices to prevent problems escalating.

Councillor Jean Innes, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “The council remains committed to protecting residents, supporting safe communities, and taking decisive action against those who cause harm or disruption.

“There has been lots of positive action taken so far this year to tackle issues in our neighbourhoods, and we’re grateful for the work that has been carried out by our teams to obtain various orders and notices that put a stop to unwanted behaviours.

“I hope that this acts as a warning to others that we will not tolerate anti-social behaviour and appropriate action will be taken.”

Council tenants who are concerned about anti-social behaviour in their communities are
encouraged to report it to the Housing Management team by emailing asb@chesterfield.gov.uk
or telephoning 01246 345071.

If
anti-social behaviour does not involve a council tenancy, it can still be reported to the Council’s community safety team on 01246 345345 or via the My Chesterfield platform.
