Young people, parents and carers are invited to a free event in Chesterfield this October to explore the options available after school, including apprenticeships, technical education routes and local career opportunities.
The Careers Street Chesterfield event will take place on Wednesday 14 October, from 6pm to 8pm, at Chesterfield Football Club. Places must be booked in advance.
Attendees will be able to hear from local employers, training providers and education partners, take part in short presentations and a panel discussion, and speak directly to exhibitors through marketplace-style networking.
Organised by Chesterfield Borough Council and supported by East Midlands Combined County Authority Careers Hub, the event aims to give young people and their families practical advice about the different pathways into work, training and further education.
This event follows the success of nine events over the past three years since the start of the Chesterfield Skills Action Plan 2023 to 2027 – attracting over 700 people.
This latest event will build on previous success by showcasing current opportunities and helping attendees understand the skills, qualifications and experience that can lead to rewarding careers across a range of sectors.
Councillor Tricia Gilby, leader of Chesterfield Borough Council and vice chair of the Skills and Employment Partnership, said: “Choosing what to do after school is a big decision, and events like this help young people and their families feel more confident about the options available.
“By bringing employers, providers and education partners together in one place, we can make it easier for people to ask questions, access practical advice and find out more about apprenticeships, technical education and the skills needed for different career paths.
“It also supports local businesses by helping to develop the workforce they need for the future.”
Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward said: “We need young people to develop skills for the future, and that doesn’t need to happen in a university. Apprenticeships can open doors, earlier, by giving young people the chance to earn while they learn, developing skills and competencies that will take them into a rewarding career.
“The EMCCA Careers Hub values events like these because they help young people and their families to understand the different routes available after school, from apprenticeships and technical education to further training and employment. There is always choice, and it is our role to support people in making the best choice for them.
“However, this is also valuable to employers, seeking the best people to join their business. Local businesses should create apprenticeships as part of their growth strategies, and events like this help them to meet the talent that is out there.”
Refreshments and a light food buffet will be available at the event.
