We are looking for a highly motivated plant mechanic to join our environmental services team to maintain, service, and repair a diverse range of vehicles, plant, horticultural, and agricultural equipment.
Chesterfield Borough Council operates a modern fleet of vehicles that are preventatively maintained to a very high standard. The successful applicant will be workshop-based but will also be required to attend vehicles at the roadside, in parks, or at satellite depots.
In addition, the role will involve assisting with minor remedial repairs to playground equipment and park/street furniture such as gates, fencing, and street litter bins.
Responsibilities include:
- Conduct thorough inspections of Environmental Services owned vehicles, plant, and machinery
- Perform routine maintenance tasks, including oil changes, brake repairs, and tyre rotations
- Diagnose mechanical problems using appropriate tools and techniques
- Repair or replace defective parts using hand tools and power tools
- Carry out basic fabrication work as required
- Maintain accurate records of repairs and maintenance performed
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and standards in all tasks
- Collaborate with team members to improve processes and efficiency
The successful candidate should have proven experience as a mechanic or in a similar role, or have served a recognised apprenticeship in Motor Vehicle Engineering to NVQ Level 3 or equivalent. A full driving licence is required, with a Category B licence essential and Category C advantageous.
Experience working on or maintaining agricultural or grounds maintenance machinery would be advantageous. Fabrication skills and welding experience would also be beneficial.
This is a physically demanding role, requiring activities such as kneeling, bending, pulling, pushing, lifting, and carrying, along with any other physical effort associated with the role.
If you are passionate about being a vehicle technician and are eager to contribute to a dynamic and friendly team, we encourage you to apply for this exciting opportunity.
